How to Write an Informative Essay: Ultimate Guide
Effective writing is a critical requirement if you are to excel as a student. You will likely come across different assignments as part of your assessments. The most notable of them is an informative essay. Most students find informative writing challenging, choosing to settle for low grades or going online for copied content. Well, this does not have to be the case for you. Effective writing is a skill that anyone can master with some practice. Here are some tips to get started with your informative writing.
First, What Is an Informative Essay?
An informative or expository essay is one of the many types of writing you will encounter in the course of your academic life. Even outside of academics, you will find informative writing everywhere – from instructions for putting products together to newspaper articles. The purpose of this type of writing is to clearly and accurately relay important information while keeping your readers engaged and interested until the end of the text. In essence, an informative essay is a form of academic writing in which the author communicates important information and demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a chosen topic. How is this type of paper written?
Here Is How to Start an Informative Essay
As most students believe, the most challenging part of writing an informative essay is the beginning. If you have ever found yourself staring at the blank screen of your computer, unsure of how to get started with your paper, just know that you are not alone. Given the importance of the introduction, students feel pressured to look for a perfect start, which is the wrong way to approach this essay.
Informative writing is a process, not an event. As such, before you sit down to draft the paper, take your time to prepare and come up with a detailed plan. To make sure that you don’t get stuck in the starting phase, here are some useful steps to follow:
- Take detailed notes
- Choose an interesting and informative topic
- Create an outline to organize your ideas
- Create a draft as soon as possible
Start by Brainstorming and Taking Notes
The first important step to start is to brainstorm. This is the process of noting down ideas as they come to you. These ideas will facilitate your outline. Next, conduct preliminary research using your ideas to identify credible and informative topics. During the process of brainstorming and initial reading, take down notes of anything you consider relevant to your essay. Group the notes according to the main ideas, which will help you to infer associations between the sources you have consulted. Also, take notes of the details needed to cite the sources used.
Choose a Manageable and Informative Topic
Your topic choice will determine how fast you can start the process of writing and the materials you will be able to locate. Of course, there are times when you will be assigned a topic or a set of topics to choose from. At other times, you may be given free rein to research and select your own area of interest. When given the freedom to choose, make sure that your pick meets the instructions set out in the prompt. A good topic is interesting and straightforward. Consider your audience as you are mulling over the options.
How to Write a Good Informative Essay?
There is no silver bullet for writing an informative paper. However, there is a consensus that good academic writing should be supported by evidence. Start writing the initial draft as soon as possible. All the preparation in the world will be of no use if you do not allocate sufficient time for drafting and editing the work.
To start the initial draft, list the questions connected to your chosen topic as well as the facts you already know based on your experience and personal knowledge. Note down specific real-life examples to support your points. Informative essays must be anchored on detailed research. Make sure that your sources are relevant and no older than 5 years. While writing the initial draft, don’t worry about mistakes and typos, there will be time to proofread and edit your work once you have finished writing. Here are some tips to enhance the quality of your writing:
- Always proofread and edit your work: if possible, hire our proofreaders and editors to ensure that your paper is coherent and free of typos and mistakes.
- Make your information interesting: use unexpected facts, figures, quotes, and examples to make your writing outstanding.
- Use the right order to organize information: informative writing can be confusing if your readers get lost in the details. Organization is key.
How Does One Create a Good Informative Essay Outline?
When you need to create a good informative paper, the outline is a critical consideration. In this respect, it can be equated to the role of a blueprint for an architect. The thing is that outlining ensures that all your main points are organized in a logical and coherent manner. It is essentially a process of subordination in which the author subdivides a new level of ideas from the idea of the higher level. At the same time, each level of the outline should have at least two entries and should contain an increasing amount of specific detail. There are several types of outlines to consider, and they are:
- Scratch outline – often used when you need to write your paper in a hurry.
- Topic outline – uses formal alphabetic and numeric structures, each line containing only a few lines to guide the writer during the drafting process.
- Full sentence outline – ideal when your paper focuses on complex
Informative Essay Structure
Having a proper structure makes your writing coherent and interesting. Top writers understand how to focus on the main idea and use the right format and logical statements. A good informative essay should include a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concise conclusion. Use this structure to capture and retain your audience’s attention.
Informative Essay Introduction
The introduction is the first part of your essay that your readers encounter, and it will determine whether they will actually read the rest of the text or not. A good introduction opens with a sound hook sentence to interest your readers in what you want to communicate. The introduction should also have brief background information and a good thesis statement.
Informative Essay Body
The body is where you articulate your points and support them with evidence and examples. Share some interesting facts. Delve into some unknown details. Each body paragraph contains a different main claim. Use transition phrases and words effectively to connect the various paragraphs and bring unity to your text.
Informative Essay Conclusion
Essentially, the goal of the conclusion is to bring closure to your writing, summarizing the main points and leaving a long-lasting impression. Avoid the temptation to introduce any new material in this section. You can also restate the thesis statement, highlighting how the points come together to support the main claim. Use these tips to enhance your essay writing ability. To sum up, effective writing is a skill you can master with some time and practice. In the meantime, don’t shy away from seeking expert assistance from our competent writers.

Spindletop: Why is it Significant in the United States Reliance on Oil?
Life in Texas and in the United States changed on January 10th 1901 when a geyser of oil shot up and started covering the ground at a little place called Spindletop (“Spindletop Drew World to Beaumont”). Although there were other wells that were bigger and richer, it was the wells at Spindletop that the Texan oil business really got started.
One of the key reasons that Spindletop was so important was because it was not only productive but the oil was in a place where it could be easily transported. Once the oil started to spill out over the fields, workers put up earthen sides to the fields and created an oil lake that was conveniently situated next to a railway track. It was really easy for the workers to load the oil into tank cars so that it could be transported to refineries all over the United States, and as technology grew that rail track was replaced with a pipeline that transported the oil directly to a port for shipping (“Spindletop…”).
James Clark and Michel Halbouty wrote in the history of Spindletop published in 1952 that “Not only was America to become the leading oil nation with the first six wells in Spindletop, but it would completely crack the oil monopoly…Spindletop could produce more oil in one day than the rest of the fields of the world combined” (“Spindle…” n.p). Uhler was equally enthusiastic about the impact Spindletop had on American and the rest of the world. He wrote that at a time when most successful wells were producing approximately 100 barrels of oil a day, Spindletop started at a rate nearly 1,000 times more than that. In the first nine days the well poured 800,000 barrels of oil into the field before the owners could cap the hole (Uhler np).
Uhler said that the Spindletop blew at a critical time in the global timeline. The world needed energy – prior to the oil era it was coal that fuelled the steel mills and the oilers or steamships and trains, not to mention heating in millions of homes and businesses. Coal was cheap and plentiful and could be reined to product lubricants, kerosene and natural gas. Petroleum at that time could also be refined but it was harder to find and more expensive to drill for.
Before Spindletop the oil business in America was small – it was Russia that had the biggest oil fields. America though was trying to find more oil fields and drillers had looked in places such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kansas and California. The findings really impacted the economy – when oil was found prices went down; as the wells dried up the prices soured again. There was no one source that could provide the oil reserves on a consistent basis and it was this rollercoaster that created the fortunes of people like J.D. Rockerfeller (Uhler np).
But that all changed thanks to Spindletop. When it first blew its well that morning of January 10th 1901 men thought, “this might go to 500 barrels per day” – they started waiting for the well to dry up, but it just didn’t and once the surrounding fields were full of the black gold, men had to use a bit of ingenuity to create the first “Christmas tree” to choke the well’s copious flow (Uhler np). In less than three months more than 40,000 people came into the area – there were six successful wells on the same land by September 1901.
All of sudden land was at a premium and people were finding work on the oil fields themselves and the refineries and storage facilities that sprang up to cater for the new demand. As the original wells tapered off production in 1904 more wells were dug and by 1927 more than 10,000 people were employed in the oil fields. The Great Depression hit the area hard but the wells kept producing (Cho np). It wasn’t until the 1990’s that oil was reduced to a limited amount found in the salt brine. The hill started to subside and Spindletop was finally reduced to a wasteland. But it is thanks to Spindletop that America secured its position as a major player in the oil fields during the 20th century and that will never be forgotten.
